The candidate will be responsible for the operation and management of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry.
The candidate will
(i) work with faculty and students on NMR experiments for characterization of molecular structure and dynamics,
(ii) train undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates and faculty in proper operation of NMR spectrometers,
(iii) maintain and repair (where possible) all NMR hardware and associated software, computers and equipment, as well as the laboratory area,
(iv) order chemicals, NMR glassware and other related equipment for the NMR facility (billing of research groups is also required),
(v) ensure that a regular schedule of NMR cryogen fills is maintained (includes ordering of cryogens, billing),
(vi) maintain a high level of knowledge regarding modern NMR experiments,
(vii) participate as an educational facilitator (e.g., setting up training sessions, a
ssisting in undergraduate laboratories, etc.), and
(viii) participate in departmental committees with focus on NMR instrumentation and other "large capital" equipment.
The candidate will have successfully completed a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics or a related discipline with a focus on NMR, and have a minimum of 2 year post-doctoral experience or equivalent. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary, as the NMR Facility Coordinator will be continually aiding and advising faculty and students. This includes
(i) ability to train students at the undergraduate and graduate levels,
(ii) communicate with faculty and students in research groups in chemistry and biochemistry, and
(iii) advisory roles in sample preparation, experimental design, spectrometer maintenance and repair, etc. The candidate must demonstrate effective organizational skills, be self-motivated, and demonstrate good management skills. Strong computer skills and basic electronics knowledge are also required. The position also requires some physical labour and a high level of concentration.
Preference will be given to a candidate with experience in biological or solids NMR.
