NMR SpectroscopistUniversity of Alberta - Edmonton, Alberta
Job Open: 01-Dec-2010   Job Close: 10-Dec-2010 This position offers a comprehensive benefits package which can be viewed at: Salary is subject to the University Furlough Levy. The Department of Chemistry is a large, complex, teaching and research department with 35 academic staff, each with their own research group, and a compliment of academic, non-academic, postdoctoral, and graduate student components totalling over 400 persons. Part of a team of specialists, this position will provide NMR support to researchers within the Department. Duties Performs NMR experiments and provides the results from the NMR experiments to academic staff and students in the Department of Chemistry as well as for the University at large Applies general scientific knowledge, and knowledge gained from the experiments, to problems of chemical interest such as molecular structure determination, evaluation of kinetic or thermodynamic data, molecular interactions and molecular motions to ensure researchers synthesized or isolated the correct chemical compound Operates, optimizes, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs eight NMR spectrometers and Linux/Unix based spectrometer host computers, data stations, and other equipment that interfaces with the NMR spectrometers Performs cryogen refills (both liquid helium and liquid nitrogen) for the Department's eleven NMR spectrometers Prepares samples to be run on the spectrometers by adding various solvents, reference materials, and reagents to the required concentrations; sample preparation is a critical part of recording NMR spectra and extra care entails significantly better results Coordinates the day-to-day operation of the NMR facility; schedules and reassigns personnel, including self; and samples, for NMR experiments, cryogen refills for all superconducting NMR magnets, spectrometer repairs and maintenance, and/or new equipment installations Instructs graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and sometimes faculty members in the operation of NMR equipment and techniques Provides assistance to other technologists in the laboratory, on and off campus as required Provides information about capabilities of NMR equipment and techniques to visitors to the NMR facility Ensures users comply with safety regulations and ensures adherence to all laboratory safety standards including chemical safety Keeps up to date with relevant developments in NMR by attending workshops, lectures, and by conducting literature searches Orders routine supplies and sundries for the NMR facility Qualifications Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in Chemistry Minimum of 5 years experience in NMR Knowledge of electronics and Unix based operating systems and programming are assets Strong verbal and written communication skills Self motivated with exceptional problem solving skills Detail orientated with excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills The ability to work independently and part of team How to Apply Apply Online Note: Online applications are accepted until midnight Mountain Standard Time of the closing date.
